The church congregation’s choice to donate the property to the Park District was a significant gift to Des Plaines’ recreational and green space, allowing the new north park section to be connected to the rest of Lake Park. The Park District produced development plans for the region, which were subsequently examined by the public in 2009 and 2010. Construction began in the spring of 2011, and the majority of the work was finished in the late autumn.
A fishing pier, picnic shelter, gazebo, native plants and sensory garden, open space, family play area with bocce ball and bags courts, walking/bicycling path, informative signs, drinking fountains, and a cooling spray have all been added to the area. One of the Park District’s two major ecological efforts is located near the north end of Lake Opeka.

North Lake Park Details
Lake Loveland has been a part of the city of Loveland for almost a century, having been formed in 1893 from what was once a wetland known as Hays Lake. The lake has long been restored as a more calm and pleasant environment, and North Lake Park, located in its northern corner, offers a variety of outdoor activities perfect for families.
The North Lake Park features a swim beach as well as a large playground complete with a giant plastic octopus and a play structure modelled after a galleon’s mast. Families will find North Lake Park’s play areas to be quite friendly for youngsters, with plenty of room and various jungle gym structures to swing from.
Picnickers and park visitors will also discover a huge grassy area to spread out a blanket and a covered picnic place to avoid the summer sun. The park also has Owen’s Field, a baseball diamond, soccer grounds and tennis, basketball and horseshoe courts. During the summer, the park has a concession stand where hot dogs are sold.
The Buckhorn Northern Railroad, which operates periodically, is a tiny train that transports guests over the summer season. The train is a recreation of the steam train that used to transport clay across Loveland.
Loveland Lake also has a fish population and holds the Annual Loveland Fishing Derby. Anglers can cast their lines from the lake’s shores or from the Duck Pond’s fishing dock.
North Lake Park does not allow watercraft.
