The Swaminarayan branch of Hinduism is represented by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, which is led by Pramukh Swami Maharaj. In 1972, Chicago had only six devotees. Pramukh Swami Maharaj inspired the Sunday Satsang congregation. The Satsang in the Chicago region grew dramatically under his constant direction during his trips in 1974, 1977, and 1980. In the Chicago suburb of Glen Ellyn, a little building on a four-acre tract of property was purchased. The structure was refurbished to fit our requirements. Pramukh Swami Maharaj dedicated the first BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Chicagoland in 1984.
Satsang’s expansion throughout the years necessitated the need for new facilities. Our needs were satisfied by the present land in Bartlett. This property on Route 59 was purchased in 1994. Pramukh Swami Maharaj blessed the land for the construction of a Mandir. He oversaw the construction of the cultural complex known as a ‘Haveli’. This Haveli has a big assembly hall as well as facilities for children, youth, and adult Satsang.
Pujya Viveksagar Swami performed the groundbreaking ceremony and laid the foundational stone in 1998. Jim Edgar, the Governor of Illinois at the time, declared that day ‘Pramukh Swami Maharaj Day in Illinois’ and honoured Pramukh Swami Maharaj.

The Hindu Mandir is a place of worship and prayer for Hindus. The Shilpa Shastra, a collection of architectural treatises that have been an intrinsic element of Indian architecture and engineering for thousands of years, is used to construct the edifice. According to Hindu philosophy, the holy images and worship rites in the Mandir comprise the very heart of uplifting the soul to the pinnacle of God-realization. Swaminarayan Mandirs across the world fulfil the old and lofty notion of Hindu Mandirs.
A unique cultural complex – a finely built, traditional wooden Haveli – lies adjacent to the Mandir. The Haveli is a type of traditional Indian architectural construction that evolved during the Rajput period, from the 15th to the 19th century, in the western Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The Haveli, with its centre open courtyard, exhibits the amazing woodworking talent of Indian craftsmen. The remarkable assortment of decorative and symbolic designs that adorn many brackets, pillars, arches, and balconies demonstrates this.
